Individual story proposal

About the ifdividual story this quarter, I have two ideas. One is the changes from Google. Before Google (or B.G.), peopleĀ found their information from TV, radio, and other media. Sometimes they used internet, but it wasn’t faster than asking their friends. At that time, the library was the most efficient way to find out any data or information. But now we have Google, and the way to search changed. Besides the searching engine, Google tries to be more functional and change everything. The otherĀ idea is how blog or wiki brings the personal publish period. With blog, anyone can show himself to the world, and it change the way how people know each other.

I have these two options, and I will pick one up for my individual story. I’m not sure the story will be like a fiction or a research, but I will try to let it be readable.

I’m trying to remember what my life was like B.G. I almost can’t remember! :) I can’t even imagine going back to life without the internet and without Google now. It really has had a huge impact on how we find information. Do you think you will look at any of the consequences of relying so exclusively on one search engine?

One thing that I’ve noticed with the information age is that libraries seem to get more use, not less. People might start their searches online with Google, but this is often just enough to pique more interest and this might send them to the library to get books and more in-depth information. Also, libraries have done an amazing job at making themselves relevant by compiling much of their information online and subscribing to online journals.

I’m curious what you will use for your images. Will you show examples of some of the different things that Google offers? Will you interview people about their online search habits? I look forward to seeing more of your project.

it’s strange because I was on the internet at a very young age and i always had yahoo available to me.. haha… when i was on the internet before that it was only to play games…

I think the story about wiki’s and blogs bringing about the personal publishing era would be really facinating to hear about. on top of that it has led to developments like you tube and google videos i think it would be important to talk about how they contributed as well.

I’m embarrassed I’m old enough to remember when the Apple II was top of the line technology. Good Lord. Of the two, I think a comparison of research methods B.G. and A.G. is more refined and easier to research and present a story upon. Personally, I’d be interested in seeing what Google’s strategies were in search engine optimization and information archiving that made them, considered by most, the premier online search engine. How has Google, itself, grown from start to now? How long until it becomes the next Evil Empire?

I like the search engine B.G > A.G. story. You could contact people from Google, maybe Ragan from Chan’s class might have some resouces. The computer definitely affects the library as well; there are plenty of librarians at UW and King County who can testify to that and many can relate to the B.G. era.

The second idea would be great for showing the changes in journalism in the digital age with blogs etc.

Regarding connecting with people, wikis and tagging are something to look at too :-)

    Great ideas!

Not fiction — remember, this is research-based story. BG is great concept!

I think you could still find people, even on this campus, who are operating in a B.G. mode. ;-) It might be interesting to “follow” them and see how they accomplish things, then draw the parallels.
