In September 1998 when Google started, it changed everyone’s searching habit. When mentioning the searching engine, everyone thinks of Google. Google is so powerful that makes it a great empire and a new dynasty of the cyberspace. So, we can call it “B.G.” which means the years before google.
When people are used to using Google, most of them cannot recall how they searched what they needed at the time. How did we search our data before google? How was the life in the year of B.G.? If we do research on this topic, we can find that there should be two periods in the time of B.G., and they are devided by a great tool called internet. That means, internet has had the strong function of exchanging messages from dozen of years ago. There were e-mail and BBS, and everyone can tell others information via the internet. However, the fact “getting information from other people” didn’t change at the first time. Asking, is the most basic way how one grabs the information before internet.
There are several ways to ask people. We ask family, ask friends, ask cohorts or classmates, ask anyone we can ask. If the question is more difficult, we ask teacher or professor. If the question is specific, we ask expert. If they cannot solve our problem, we ask who to ask. Sometimes we can find the information through the guidebook, poster, or advertisement. In the world that had no internet, it was really hard to be famous because it took long time to spread out new messages. The television could be the fastest way to advertise. Although it didn’t help searching at all, it made everyone get different part of the information and let people be able to gain answer easier.
Another asking way is to ask by phone, especially having question to some institutions. In this case, we can get their phone number by phonebook, guidebook, ad, or calling 411. If we cannot find the answer by this way, there is one most important way: going to library. There are so many books that we have to ask the librarian where the books we need may be, and we have to read and read until we find out the answer. It takes time, but it may be the most efficient way in some case. If we are doing research, we can spend several days there.
Fortunately, the internet has been developed during my student life. With the internet, we don’t ask others by mouth but by hands. And Soon, people don’t ask, and they turned into search. When the amount of website was more enough, the website searching engine came up. Actually, Google is not the first searching engine in the world. There were other ones before it. Like Yahoo, besides the personal services, it provided the website searching function. There were many sites like Yahoo and people searched the other websites with this way. So we can say, Google didn’t change people’s searching habit rapidly. They used the other tool before that and finally turned to use Google when it was more and more famous.
